Class Of O Nine impressive in OSS debut
FLAMBORO, ON — This year’s crop of two-year-old pacing fillies opened their Ontario Sires Stakes season at Flamboro Downs on Sunday evening, with Class Of O Nine laying down the quickest mile of the three $40,000 Gold Eliminations.
Coming off a 1:56.3 victory in her qualifying effort at Mohawk Racetrack on June 17, Class Of O Nine got a confident steer from Milton, ON resident Randy Waples. Starting from Post 5 in the field of eight, Waples eased the filly into third spot as Tymal Trilogy stepped out to a :28.1 opening quarter.
Tymal Trilogy continued to lead the fillies through a :58.1 half and a 1:27.4 three-quarters, at which point Waples sent Class Of O Nine to the outside. The fan favourite easily reeled in the leaders and cruised home a one and one-quarter length victor in a personal best 1:56.2. Legal Entity closed smartly to claim the runner-up’s share, with Tymal Trilogy completing the triactor.
Trainer Bob McIntosh of Windsor, ON and Dwight Stacey of Mitchell, ON bred and own Class Of O Nine, the fourth foal from broodmare Skippin School. The Camluck miss will benefit from the advantageous Post 1 in next Sunday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Regal Attitude captured the first Gold Elimination with a front end effort that saw her lay down a :28.2 opening quarter, a :58.1 half and a 1:28 three-quarters on the way to a 1:57.1 victory. Scott Zeron piloted the Stonebridge Regal miss to the one and one-half length score over Breezin On Bye and Sauble Claire. Fan favourite Three Angels, owned by Aaron Waxman of Burlington, ON, made an early miscue and finished well back in fifth.
Mark Etsell trains Regal Attitude for owner David Snowden of Bowmanville, ON. The talented youngster is a half-sister to four winners of $100,000-plus, including the fast Twin B Gambit, who banked $370,226 in his racing career. Oakville, ON resident Zeron will send Regal Attitude after a Gold Final crown from Post 4 in next weekend’s lucrative battle.
The final Gold Elimination trophy went home with Yves Sarrazin of La Presentation, QC, the owner of YS Gold Star.
Starting from the outside Post 7, driver Sylvain Filion took the filly off the pace early, cruising along in fifth as St Lads Hottie rolled through fractions of :29.3 and :59. Heading for the 1:28 three-quarters Filion sent YS Gold Star after the leaders and the fan favourites sailed home to a one and one-quarter length victory in 1:57.1. Flight Delay and Spicy Celine Dijon, owned by Eugenio Chiaravalle of Binbrook, also advanced to next week’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Milton, ON resident Filion engineered YS Gold Star’s second lifetime victory for Sarrazin and trainer Daniel Martin. The daughter of Armbro Deuce and Kikin Up Dirt recorded her first win in a two-year-old filly event at Mohawk Racetrack on June 20, clocking an impressive 1:55.1. Filion will steer YS Gold Star after a third victory from Post 8 next Sunday, July 3.
