CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Making their debuts in the Ontario Sires Stakes program, two-year-old Western Terror daughters Briar Goes West and Shacked Up swept to victory in their $40,000 Gold Eliminations at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday evening.

In the first elimination Briar Goes West emerged triumphant from a thrilling stampede down the stretch that saw the top five fillies finish within three-quarters of a length of each other. Seventh turning for home, the Mark Austin trainee exploded down the stretch to claim a head victory over Arts Star and Fashion Week in a personal best 1:54.1.

Fourth and fifth-place finishers Topaz Seelster and Rose Seelster also advanced to next Friday’s $120,000 Gold Final, hitting the wire just one-half and three-quarters of a length behind the winner.

Regular reinsman Jack Moiseyev of Moffat piloted Briar Goes West to the victory for breeder Michael Cecile of Windsor. Starting from Post 5, Moiseyev settled the filly at the back of the pack while Cheap Motel and Northern Duchess duelled to a :26.3 opening quarter, then eased her to the outside as Northern Duchess extended the hot pace through a :55.1 half. As Northern Duchess continued to blaze the trail at the 1:24.1 three-quarters, Briar Goes West was still sitting on the outside, but had moved up to within six lengths of the leader.

Around the final turn the early leaders were fading and Moiseyev was gearing Briar Goes West up for the finishing kick that would earn the young pacer her second victory in six starts, and her first in stakes action. The win boosted the filly’s earnings to $31,956.

Two races later Shacked Up made it a Western Terror sweep with her third straight victory, halting the teletimer in a smart 1:52.4. In rein to Milton resident Steve Condren, Shacked Up floated off the starting gate from Post 6 and landed in fourth spot on the rail. Reigning Gold Final champion St Lads Popcorn won the early wrestling match for control of the front end and took the fillies to the quarter in a steady :28.1.

While St Lads Popcorn handed control to Terroronthebeach before the :56.3 half, Condren tipped Shacked Up to the outside and was sitting on the leader’s flank as she passed by the three-quarter marker in 1:25.3. Accelerating around the final turn, Shacked Up straightened out for home three lengths on top, and was able to maintain that tempo down the stretch to score a four and three-quarter length victory.

St Lads Popcorn settled for second, bringing her win streak to a close at five, and Shellace picked up the third-place finisher’s share. Icey Breeze and Alison Wonderpan also advanced out of the second elimination to the $120,000 Gold Final.

Richard “Nifty” Norman trains Shacked Up for Bulletproof Enterprises of Boca Raton, FL. In her first two starts, Aug. 21 and Sept. 4 at Mohawk Racetrack, the filly scored identical 1:53.2 victories. Friday’s triumph puts her at a perfect three for three, with earnings of $38,000.

Shacked Up will make her bid for a fourth win from Post 1 in next Friday’s $120,000 Gold Final, while St Lads Popcorn attempts to restart her win streak from Post 4. The complete line up for the Sept. 19 final is as follows:
