Windsun Magical threatens OSS record at Mohawk
CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Next Monday’s two-year-old trotting filly Gold Final looks like a list of invites to an exclusive country club, a club where only those sired by Angus Hall and Kadabra need apply.
In four Gold Eliminations at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday, Aug. 20, all but one of the 12 fillies that earned a top three finish were sired by either Angus Hall or Kadabra. Wesgate Crown daughter Thys Worthy Jwl brought the only diversity to the top 12, and she was not one of the two third-place finishers that earned a return ticket to Mohawk for next week’s Gold Final.
Windsun Magical led off the Angus Hall-Kadabra show in the first race with an impressive four and three-quarter length win in 1:57.1, just one-fifth of a second shy of the Ontario Sires Stakes record held jointly by Peaceful Way and Pure Ivory. Kadabra daughter Feels Like Magic earned the runner-up spot, while Angus Hall daughter Sexy Siren was seven and a half lengths back in third.
The win was the third for Windsun Magical, who temporarily held the Ontario Sires Stakes record for two-year-old trotting fillies on a five-eights mile track when she toured the Kawartha Downs oval in 1:57.3 in her July 31 Gold Elimination. The record was matched the same night by Dornello and broken in the Aug. 7 Gold Final by Torch.
Jason Gilchrist trains and drives Windsun Magical for Dr. Frederick Albert of Prescott, who purchased the Kadabra daughter out of the Forest City Yearling Sale last fall for $16,000. In seven starts the precocious young trotter has earned $103,158.
Another Kadabra daughter picked up her second straight win, and first in Ontario Sires Stakes action, in the second elimination. In rein to Paul MacDonell, Bella Dolce closed like a freight train in the stretch to reel in pacesetter and fan favourite Its My Time, pulling away to a two and one-quarter length victory in 1:57.3. Angus Hall daughter Its My Time held on for second, while Kadabra offspring Ms Naughty earned third-place honours.
The first foal from $668,824 winner Pizza Dolce, Bella Dolce is owned by breeder David McDuffee of Nashua, NH and trained by Richard Norman. The regally bred youngster made her debut in a division of the Robert Stewart Stakes at Mohawk on Aug. 12 where she posted a five length victory in 1:59.1.
In the third elimination, Angus Hall miss Sugar Coated Lindy out-duelled reigning Gold Final champion and Kadabra daughter Torch in the stretch to claim a head victory in 1:58.1. Angus Hall filly Stonebridge Dancer, who controlled the pace for most of the mile, was just one-quarter length behind the battling leaders in third.
Sugar Coated Lindy also started her career in the Robert Stewart Stakes, where she was placed ahead from fourth to third when one of her peers failed to lose ground while on a break. Moffat resident Anders Wolden trains Sugar Coated Lindy for Ely Iversen of Moffat, who acquired the filly from last fall’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale for $65,000 US, and Chris Christoforou engineered Monday’s victory from Post 9.
The last elimination went to Angus Hall daughter Beyond Limits in another upset. Fan favourite Dornello set the tempo for much of the mile, but could not hold off the fast closing Beyond Limits in the stretch. Beyond Limits hit the wire half a length on top in 2:00.1, Angus Hall miss Dornello was second and Thys Worthy Jwl rounded out the top three.
Beyond Limits captured a Gold Elimination in the July 14 season opener at Georgian Downs, but was forced to miss the final due to sickness. After missing almost one month, the filly returned to action in the Robert Stewart Stakes where she made a late break and finished well back in ninth.
Scott McEneny of Waterdown trains Beyond Limits for Beyond Limits Stable of Toronto, Stephen Moza of Kelowna, BC and Joe Tinelli of Edmonton, AB. The partners acquired the filly at the 2006 Forest City Yearling Sale for $42,000.
The top two finishers from each elimination, plus Sexy Siren and Ms Naughty, who won the coin toss amongst the third-place finishers, will return to Mohawk Racetrack on Monday, Aug. 27 for the third $130,000 Gold Final on their schedule this summer. Post positions for the Gold Final are as follows:
