Trotting filly’s Gold Final victory a work of art
REXDALE, ON — It was a two filly race in the $130,000 Gold Final at Woodbine Racetrack on Monday night as elimination winners Erotica and Southern Senorita left the rest of the field tossing in their wake.
Leaving from Posts 7 and 9, the pair permitted Chuckalo Beckster to post the early fractions of :27.3 and :57.3 before Erotica and driver Douglas R. Ackerman took control heading for the 1:27.2 three-quarters. With Heartful Image and Southern Senorita coming hard up the outside Woodbine fans readied themselves for a close finish, but as the fillies pounded down the stretch Erotica and Southern Senorita clearly demonstrated the skills that earned them elimination gold last week.
At the wire the pair were separated by just three-quarters of a length, with Erotica claiming the first Gold Final title of the season in 1:56.2. Heartful Image hung on for third, six lengths behind the leaders.
Owned by breeders Douglas J. and Ada Jean Ackerman of Warren, MI, Erotica boosted her earnings to $168,350 with the victory and now sets her sights on a pair of stake events at Woodbine, the June 3 Casual Breeze and June 18 Elegantimage.
“She’s going to stay in Canada for the whole time here,” said Douglas R. Ackerman from the winner’s circle. “She’s going to race a week from Friday in the (Casual Breeze) and the Elegantimage comes after that.”
In addition to the trotting filly Gold Final, Woodbine fans were treated to a trio of Gold Series Eliminations for the sophomore trotting colts. Heading the list of qualifiers for next week’s $130,000 Gold Final was Last Flight Out, who clocked in with a smart 1:55.4 victory in the seventh race.
With the legendary John Campbell in the race bike, Last Flight Out stalked the leaders through fractions of :27.1, :57 and 1:26 before powering to the front of the pack around the last turn. The Angus Hall son fought off Good To Be King through the final strides to record the quarter length victory. Favourite Brawn Seelster picked up the third-place share of the $38,141 purse.
“I was very impressed with him,” said Campbell, who piloted Last Flight Out for trainer Susanne Kerwood and owners Norman and Isabelle Vartanian of Hamilton. “He’s a very easy horse to drive. You just have to be a little bit careful with him at the gate. After that he’s very professional and I thought he was very game tonight.”
The Canadian Breeders Champion at two, Last Flight Out will start from the difficult Post 10 in next week’s $130,000 Final.
The other eliminations, timed in an identical 1:56.2, saw King Conch son BJs King outsprint Brancaleone and favourite Tyrone Spitn Image to record his third victory of the season for trainer Joe Stutzman and lessee Robert Key of Leechburg, PA, and two-year-old Gold Final winner Brazen prevail over favourite Northern Ensign and Stonebridge Diablo. Trond Smedshammer drives and trains Balanced Image son Brazen for his American Viking Racing Stable of Allentown, NJ.
BJs King and Brazen will start from Posts 7 and 9 in the May 30 Gold Final.
In addition to the top three finishers from each elimination, it was fourth-place finisher Monsieur Kan Due’s lucky day and he will also return to Woodbine for next Monday’s lucrative showdown.
