DUNDAS, ON — A total of 31 trotting colts will tackle the Flamboro Downs half-mile on Wednesday evening in their second Grassroots start of the season.

Leading the way into the $93,482 event are the season opening Grassroots winners Elaborateobsession, owned by Jim Whelan of Troy, and Justincrediblealex, owned by Bill Megens of Paris. Both colts were easy winners in the July 3 event at Sudbury Downs, with Elaborateobsession crossing the finish line 20 lengths ahead of the field in 2:03.4 and Justincrediblealex hitting the wire six lengths on top in 2:06.

“He was a real pleasant surprise to go that fast,” says Whelan, who also raced the colt’s mother Supreme Obsession and father Elaborate Dream. “I didn’t push him, I just let him trot as fast as he wanted, and he was willing to go there pulling me around.

“We’re very happy with him. His mother was a real nice mare and his sire was a real nice horse.”

Whelan and Elaborateobsession will attempt a second straight victory from Post 7 in the second race at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday. The young trotter prepared for his hometown debut with a practice mile at Flamboro this week.

“We had him up to the track again to school him on Wednesday,” says Whelan. “I’ll train him a little bit tomorrow, Sunday he’ll play in the paddock and then he’ll jog Monday and Tuesday. And he gets to run around outside every afternoon after he jogs.”

Raised at Whelan’s farm, Elaborateobsession’s personality made him a favourite with the horseman and his family.

“He is a very pretty horse and a real character. He’s kind of like a pet dog,” says the father of four boys. “He’s not a very big horse, but he’s always wanted to do things right from Day 1.”

If the colt continues to dominate the Grassroots program he may get a shot at the Gold Series horses before the summer is out, but Whelan is in no rush to move the youngster up in class.

“If he proves he can take on the bigger ones we’ll go there later,” says the trainer and driver. “I like to start them out where they can race well.”

Elaborateobsession and his freshman trotting colt peers are featured in Races 2, 4, 6, and 8 at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday, July 21, with the first race of the afternoon stepping onto the track at 2:45 pm.
