Babyremembermyname achieves Gold Series fame
REXDALE, ON — Ontario’s top two-year-old pacing fillies made their Gold Series debut at Woodbine Racetrack on Thursday evening and fans were treated to three races worth of excitement.
Babyremembermyname posted the quickest mile of the three Gold Eliminations, stopping the clock at 1:54.3. The Apaches Fame daughter and driver Phil Hudon employed come-from-behind tactics that resulted in a nail biting last quarter as they battled every step of the way with fan favourite Pleasure Beach. Down the stretch Babyremembermyname pulled away to a three-quarter length victory over Pleasure Beach and the pair finished four lengths ahead of third-place filly Teig N Riley.
Trained by Rod Hennessy for Edward James of Aurora, Babyremembermyname was making her second lifetime start after finishing second in a Trillium Series division at Georgian Downs on June 22.
The filly that bested Babyremembermyname at Georgian Downs continued her winning ways with a 1:57.3 score in the first Gold Elimination. Grinfromeartoear daughter Ingrid Bergrin and driver Jody Jamieson sailed effortlessly around the Rexdale oval to score a one length victory over Hummnahummnahummna and favourite Lucky Angel in Race 1.
Trainer Carl Jamieson of Princeton, Jerry Jamieson of Blenheim, Thomas Kyron of Etobicoke and Dr. Robert Boyce of London share ownership of Ingrid Bergrin, who has taken one second off her personal best every time she has set foot on the racetrack.
The other elimination went to Gregg McNair trainee Claire’s Apache, who fought off the advances of favourite Lucks Mistress to score the 1:55 victory. Mike Saftic drove the filly for McNair and partner Ian Fleming of Londesborough.
Lucks Mistress earned the runner-up’s share of the $38,153 purse and Skyler Seelster picked up the third-place cheque.
The top three fillies from each elimination will return to Woodbine Racetrack next Thursday, July 8 for their first crack at a $130,000 Gold Final. Joining them will be one of the fourth-place finishers, Needmorejewels, Armbro Clarica or Diva Divine.
