BELLEVILLE, ON — Jim Whelan captured a pair of Grassroots divisions on Quinte Raceway’s Victoria Day matinee on Monday, piloting three-year-old trotting fillies Cajalooking and Grand Tiara to identical 2:06.3 victories.

Whelan kicked off his successful afternoon with Cajalooking in Race 3, taking the Mr Lavec daughter to the front just past the halfway marker and fending off a late charge from runner-up Freestall Fanny to score the victory. Sing Out Hanover rounded out the top three.

Owned by Norma and Clarence Varcoe of Alliston, Cajalooking was a three-time Grassroots winner at two, including a victory at Quinte Raceway, and boosted her earnings to $51,872 with this year’s triumph.

Whelan also captured the next Grassroots division when Grand Tiara crossed the finish line two and one half lengths ahead of Obeys Dreamcatcher. Sitting patiently on the rail, Whelan and Grand Tiara were in perfect position to benefit when pacesetter Cherry Sky made an inopportune break before the three-quarter pole. Inheriting the lead, the Brisco Hanover daughter sprinted home to her first ever win.

Troy resident Whelan shares ownership on Grand Tiara with Paul Lindsey of Fergus. Monday’s outing was just her second start this season and her fourth start lifetime.

The fastest mile of the afternoon was recorded by Clemol, who captured the first Grassroots division in 2:06.1. Starting from Post 6 the Earl daughter stalked the leaders through the early going and then turned up the heat through the stretch to score the head victory over Summertimedreams. Parkside Princess finished four lengths behind the leaders in third.

Daniel Martin of La Presentation, QC trains and drives Clemol for his partner Clement Morier of St-Jean-Baptiste, QC.

The other two divisions went to Catch This in 2:07.3 and Our Pleasure in 2:07.2. The three-year-old trotting fillies make their next Grassroots start at Sarnia’s Hiawatha Horse Park on July 13. The sophomore fillies return to Quinte Raceway on Friday, June 28 for their second Trillium Series event.
